Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about lessons? Here are some of the things we’re asked most often.

Getting Started

  • What age can my child start?

It depends on the instrument. Generally, we recommend from around age 6 for piano, 7 for ukulele and 8 for most other instruments. If you’re unsure, we can arrange a trial lesson to see what’s right for your child.

  • Do you teach adults?

Absolutely! It’s never too late to start learning or return to an instrument after a break. Adult students are welcome on the same instruments and at the same rates as younger students.

  • Can I try a lesson before committing?

Yes. A trial lesson is a great way to meet your teacher, try the instrument and see if lessons are a good fit. You can book a trial lesson in the menu above.

  • What can I expect from my first lesson?

Your teacher will get to know you, find out what you’d like to achieve and introduce you to your instrument. No preparation or previous experience is needed.

Lessons & Instruments

  • What instruments do you teach?

We offer lessons in piano, guitar, ukulele, violin, clarinet, saxophone, voice and drums. If you’re unsure which instrument is right for you or your child, we’re happy to help.

  • Do I need my own instrument?

We recommend having your own instrument so you can practice at home. For trial lessons, we can provide an instrument. We can also advise you on choosing the right one when you are purchasing your instrument.

  • How long are lessons?

Lesson length depends on the student’s age, level and instrument. Beginners usually start with one 30-minute lesson per week. As students progress, longer lessons may be recommended, with at least 45 minutes recommended for students working towards Grade 5 and above.

  • How often are lessons?

All students have a weekly lesson, which helps them build consistent progress and good practice habits.

  • How much should I practise?

Your teacher will recommend an appropriate amount based on your age and level. Regular, manageable practice is more important than long practice sessions.

Progress & Performance

  • Do students work towards exams or grades?

Yes, if you’d like to! Many students prepare for graded music exams, while others learn purely for enjoyment. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals.

  • Will students get opportunities to perform?

Yes. Students have opportunities to perform throughout the year, including our annual Concert Week.

  • What is Concert Week?

Concert Week is a special week where our students get the opportunity to perform and celebrate their progress. Concerts replace regular lessons during this week, giving students the chance to experience performing in a supportive and exciting environment. We also hold a special Adult Concert, giving our adult students their own opportunity to perform and share what they’ve been working on.

Flexibility & Practicalities

  • Can I start at any time or just at the beginning of term?

You can start at any point during the term, subject to availability. You won’t pay for any lessons you missed before joining.
